ALBERT LEA, Minn. — On May 8, 2019 at approximately 1132 hours, ALPD officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of Fountain Street and Newton Avenue South. Information provided was that a motor vehicle had traveled into Fountain Lake.
Upon arrival, officers observed three citizens in the water removing the driver from the vehicle. The driver, Barbara Gilbertson (87) from rural Alden, was transported to MCHS-Albert Lea via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. In addition, a citizen who was in the water was also transported to MCHS-Albert Lea for non-life threatening injuries.
Early investigation determined that for an unknown reason, Gilbertson lost control of the vehicle while in the lower parking lot of City Hall, traveled across Fountain Street, struck a bench and tree before entering Fountain Lake.
Assisting agencies include, Albert Lea Fire Rescue (ALFR), Mayo Ambulance, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol (MSP), and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The investigation into the crash is still under investigation. Any further information obtained will be released at a later time.
