Sheriff’s Office:

On 23 Oct 2021, at 2307 hours, Freeborn County deputies responded to a report of an
injury crash involving a UTV in the area of 180 th St and 780 th Av. The driver of the UTV
was identified as Steven Allen Reese, a 65-year-old male from rural Austin. The
passenger was identified as Elgene Henrietta Van Dyk, a 70-year-old female also from
rural Austin. Steven and Elgene were married. The UTV was eastbound on 180 th St
when it lost control and entered the south ditch. The UTV then rolled over coming to a
rest upright on its wheels at the bottom of the ditch. Both parties were transported to
Mayo Clinic Health Systems Albert Lea. Steven later succumbed to his injuries.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Mayo Ambulance, and the Albert
Lea Fire Department.
