On August 6, 2020 at approximately 1618hrs, officers of the Albert Lea Police
Department were dispatched to a shooting in the 900 Block of Front St W. Officers
were advised of a suspect name and a vehicle description.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers spoke with a 43 year old Albert Lea resident.
The victim who ,had not been injured and the suspect are acquaintances. The
victim advised the suspect had stopped his car on Front Street and fired a small
caliber weapon at him. The suspect then fled in his vehicle.
Within a short period of time, the vehicle was located at the suspect’s residence.
Officers set up a perimeter on the residence and called for the assistance of the
South Central Drug Investigation Unit SWAT team.
Prior to the team arrival, an Albert Lea police sergeant was able to have the suspect
exit the residence and he was taken into custody without incident.
A search warrant was executed on the house and vehicle. A small caliber revolver
was located in the suspect vehicle.
The suspect, Anthony Barela, 29 of Albert Lea was arrested for the following
charges; Assault with a dangerous weapon, drive –by-shooting, and possession of a
firearm by an ineligible person.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident.
Barela is being held in the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center.
