Another cold, wet week further delayed planting across
most of the state, with just 1.1 days suitable for
fieldwork during the week ending May 1, 2022,
according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics
Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1 percent very
short, 6 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 29
percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated
2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 68
percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Pasture
conditions were rated 20 percent very poor, 19 percent
poor, 33 percent fair, 26 percent good, and 2 percent
excellent.
Spring wheat planted was reported at 1 percent,
compared to 64 percent a year ago and the five-year
average of 24 percent. Oats planted was reported at 7
percent, compared to last year’s 65 percent and the
five-year average of 38 percent. Barley planted was
reported at 1 percent, compared to last year’s 56
percent and the five-year average of 20 percent.
Potatoes planted was reported at 1 percent, compared
to last year’s 39 percent and the five-year average of
26 percent. Sugarbeets planted was reported at 1
percent, compared to last year’s 72 percent and the
five-year average of 38 percent. Very limited corn and
soybean planting has taken place, but both remain
below 1 percent planted.
